However, it is becoming increasingly clear that the real challenge \u2014 and also a significant opportunity \u2014 lies elsewhere: in how those products are manufactured.<\/p>\n<p>The green transition is not simply a matter of energy efficiency or regulatory compliance. Above all, it represents a profound industrial transformation. And in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, where quality, safety and efficacy are non-negotiable, this process raises a particularly complex question: how can we move towards more sustainable models without compromising the standards that safeguard people&#8217;s health?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is not simple, but it is beginning to take shape. It involves integrating sustainability not as an additional element, but as a fundamental design criterion. In the pharmaceutical industry, the manufacturing process plays a decisive role.<\/p>\n<p>The selection of raw materials, energy consumption, water management, waste generation and packaging design are all part of a complex system in which every decision has environmental consequences. And, unlike in other industries, these decisions are subject to particularly stringent regulatory requirements.<\/p>\n<p>This calls for a shift in approach. Sustainability cannot be incorporated at the end of the process. It must be present from the very beginning, in the conception of the product itself and its manufacturing process. In other words, ecodesign in this context does not simply mean reducing materials or replacing components. It means rethinking how a product is developed to minimise its environmental impact without altering its quality, safety or efficacy profile.<\/p>\n<p>For all these reasons, our green transition cannot rely on quick fixes or superficial changes. There is no room for error. It requires a gradual approach based on scientific evidence, validation and continuous improvement. This is something we are seeing first-hand through our <strong>Farmalider ECO programme<\/strong>, which is driving the development of pharmaceutical products with more environmentally friendly packaging and formulations.<\/p>\n<p>Energy efficiency is another essential consideration on this journey towards improvement, and it must go beyond simply reducing consumption. It involves redesigning processes, investing in technology, assessing the impact of every change and ensuring that product stability remains unaffected. The same applies to waste management, the incorporation of recyclable materials into packaging and the monitoring of the supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>Because sustainability does not end at the manufacturing facilities. It extends to suppliers, logistics partners and distributors. This means incorporating environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria into supplier selection, encouraging responsible practices and moving towards collaborative models that help reduce our collective environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, developments in environmental regulation are marking a turning point for the industry. Initiatives such as European sustainability legislation and new reporting standards are requiring companies to measure, document and communicate their impact with increasing accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>But the real transformation goes beyond compliance. <strong>It is about culture.<\/strong> Sustainability cannot be understood solely as a regulatory obligation. It must become an integral part of decision-making, risk management and business strategy. And that is only possible with a long-term vision.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, concepts such as <strong>double materiality<\/strong> \u2014 which examines both a company&#8217;s impact on its environment and the risks that environmental and social factors pose to the company itself \u2014 are beginning to redefine industrial decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, sustainability in the pharmaceutical industry is no longer a discussion about the future. It is a reality that is already taking shape. Companies such as Farmalider are integrating environmental criteria into their industrial decisions, reviewing their processes and exploring new ways to reduce their environmental footprint.
